Jeffco School Board Meeting Recap – November 21

Last night (11/22) was the first Jefferson County School’s meeting of the new board. Julie Williams (district 1), John Newkirk (district 2) and Ken Witt (district 5) were sworn in. Ken Witt was elected as the new Board President.

After the new board positions were decided, time was given for public comment. Members of the public were given one minute to give feedback and share thoughts with the board. These comments will be summarized and shared on the Jefferson County Schools website.

New Board President Ken Witt made a point to quiet the rumors that Jeffco will follow the reform paths of Douglas County and Denver Public Schools. He made it clear that the new board members want to collaborate and work together with current board members Jill Fellman and Lesley Dahlkemper.

It is yet to be seen if the new board members will set an agenda that is different from the current strategy and vision of Superintendent Cindy Stevenson. It was clear from comments of teachers and staff at the meeting that they are fearful of changes that will affect their salaries and day to day operations in the schools.

Yet at the first meeting of this new Board of Education, the incoming board members made a point to clear up rumors, build bridges and voice a desire to collaborate and work together.
