Temporary Moratorium on New Edgewater Marijuana Businesses

Marijuana related businesses hoping to open in Edgewater will have to wait a few months and possibly longer. Tonight the Edgewater City Council voted unanimously to impose an emergency temporary moratorium on new marijuana related businesses within city limits.

City planning staff had recently discovered that previous statements about where new establishments could be built were incorrect. It was determined that a few more establishments could be opened in Edgewater according to current regulations. Edgewater City Clerk Beth Hedberg had been receiving at least three calls a day about new applications along with an increase in foot traffic. According to the personal opinion of City Attorney Thad Renaud, the increase in interest might be due to Wheat Ridge City Council’s decision to cap marijuana related businesses in their city limits.

Without a temporary moratorium in place, there would be a flood of new applications while discussions of new or revised regulations were discussed. Renaud noted that temporary moratoriums “give legislative bodies time for calm and responsible discussions.”

This temporary moratorium will be in place through August 31 and no new applications have been submitted from February 10 when the meeting was announced to tonight when the decision was made. The discussion of marijuana related regulations will continue at the next Edgewater City Council meeting on March 5.
