Edgewater Police Report: June 8, 2015

From Edgewater Police Chief John Hough:

On May 30, 2015, at about 12:20 AM, an officer on routine patrol observed a vehicle with only one working headlight drive into the Target parking lot at 1985 Sheridan Boulevard and drive over several concrete parking stops. When the officer contacted the vehicle, the driver, a 24-year-old male resident of Denver, was arrested and issued a Jefferson County Court summons for careless driving and DUI.

Later on May 30, 2015, at about 2:05 AM, an officer on routine patrol in the 2200 block of Sheridan Boulevard observed two vehicles southbound on Sheridan Boulevard with one vehicle following the other vehicle too closely. The officer contacted the vehicle following too closely. The driver of that vehicle, a 23-year-old female resident of Lakewood, was arrested and issued a Jefferson County Court summons for careless driving and DUI.

Sometime in the two-week period before May 30, 2015, a residence in the 2200 block of Fenton Street was burglarized when a dead bolted side door was forced open. At the time the report was taken by an officer, there was no evidence that any property had been removed from the residence.

On June 6, 2015, at about 4:35 PM, officers responded to a felony menacing and stabbing in the area of the Ace Hardware store at 1719 Sheridan Boulevard. The officers were advised that a male suspect pulled a knife on an individual who confronted the suspect stealing his bicycle from the sidewalk area in front of Papa Murphy’s Pizza at 1725 Sheridan Boulevard. The owner of the bike tackled the suspect and an individual who ran to assist the owner of the bike was stabbed by an unknown object. An officer located the suspect on Depew Street near 16th Avenue and took him into custody without incident or the use of force. The individual who intervened and assisted the owner of the bike in regaining his bike sustained a minor laceration, bruising and abrasions and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect, a 44-year- old male resident of Lakewood, was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail for aggravated robbery, 2nd degree assault, possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief and theft.

Later on June 6, 2015, at about 10:50 PM, officers responded to the King Soopers market at 1725 Sheridan Boulevard regarding an armed robbery in progress. The suspect was described as a male armed with a handgun wearing all black and a bandana covering his face. When the officers arrived at the scene, a King Soopers employee directed them toward the area underneath a bridge between the King Soopers and Target parking lots on Sheridan Boulevard where the suspect had disappeared. Agents from the Lakewood Police Department, officers from the Denver Police Department and deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area to assist the Edgewater Police Department in establishing a perimeter and searching for the suspect. The perimeter was established to the rear of the King Soopers market extending to the south toward 17th Avenue. The Denver Police Department helicopter responded to assist with overhead surveillance and lighting. The Lakewood Police Department K-9 unit was unable to locate the suspect inside the perimeter. The suspect managed to escape the perimeter; however, a .40 caliber loaded semi-automatic handgun and a bag of money taken from the King Soopers market were discovered near a dumpster in the alley behind the King Soopers market. The case is under investigation. If identified, the suspect would face charges including aggravated robbery, menacing with a deadly weapon (firearm), 1st degree kidnapping arising from ordering one of the King Soopers employees to move and 3rd degree assault. The amount of money stolen during the robbery and subsequently recovered is not being released. None of the employees of King Soopers sustained any serious injuries.
