Jeffco Readers Exceed 1,000,001-minute Summer Reading Goal in Just 8 Days

From Jefferson County Public Library:

(Lakewood, Colo. – June 5, 2014) Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) announced today that Jeffco readers have already read more than 1,000,001 minutes, exceeding the Library’s community-wide Summer Reading Challenge in only eight days.

“We know that Jefferson County is a community of readers, and they have demonstrated that with their enthusiasm for our Summer Reading Challenge,” said Pam Nissler, executive director, JCPL. “In response, we’ve now raised the challenge target to 10,000,000 minutes. We want to see just how far we can go as a community.”

The Summer Reading Challenge will run through August 14. Jefferson County residents can join the challenge by registering on the Library’s web site at jeffcolibrary.org/summerreading, and logging their reading minutes. Anyone who registers and logs minutes will be eligible for weekly prize drawings, ranging from movie tickets to Karate Birthday Parties, from martial arts lessons to concert tickets, from Rheinlander’s Bakery Cakes to free meals at area restaurants and more.

“We’ve been so gratified by the community’s response to Summer Reading!” Nissler added. “From community leaders who participated in our launch event, to the hundreds of businesses who have donated prizes, we’re seeing enormous support.

“We launched this challenge because reading during the summer months is one of the most important things kids and teens can do to maintain grade-level reading skills and succeed in school,” Nissler continued. “We’d love it if every resident in Jefferson County would participate with their friends and families!”

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is supported by generous contributions from the Jefferson County Library Foundation, Colorado Parent and FirstBank. Grand prizes were donated by John Bodnar, Noviscon Realty; Julia Hill-Nichols, Leaders Cove; Arvada Mayor Marc Williams and his wife Luanne; and Dot Wright and Roger Miller. Systemwide prizes and coupons were donated by Bandimere Speedway, Beau Jo’s Pizza, Casa Bonita, Colorado Rapids, Lakeside, McDonald’s, and Whole Foods.

Online sign-ups for the Summer Reading Challenge will continue throughout the summer. For more information, visit jeffcolibrary.org.
