Edgewater Police Report: 6/27-7/3/2016

From Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey:

On 7/5 at about 7:15 PM Edgewater Police received a report of an unknown situation with shots fired at 2070 Marshall St. A neighbor indicated that the resident/shooter had fired multiple rounds inside the home and also through his front window. A Reverse 911 was initiated for the immediate area to evacuate residents.
Officers established telephone communication with several of the resident/shooters family and friends and were eventually successful in having the gunman exit the home where he was taken into custody. Neither Police nor the gunman were injured during the incident. Lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on multiple firearms charges was Dane Hampel, 25 years of age of the Marshall St. address.

Armed Robbery – Arrest

On 6/21 at about 10 AM a male entered the Bellco Credit Union Bank and robbed the bank of an undisclosed amount of money after displaying a note that indicated he had a gun and a bomb. The robber fled the bank in a white sedan with temporary tags which an Edgewater Officer located shortly after the robbery in the 2600 block of Kendall St.

On 7/1/2016 an affidavit for the arrest of a local man was presented and a warrant obtained for a 19 year old Lakewood man. On 7/4 the Lakewood man, Leeroy Cervantes was arrested for the robbery and lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on robbery charges. The arrest was the result of excellent teamwork amongst Officers and Detectives from multiple agencies including the FBI’s Bank Robbery Team.

Good Speeding Stop & Drug Arrest

On 7/3 Officer Palmer and Corporal Geerdes stopped a vehicle for speeding along Sheridan Blvd. The driver provided the officers his brother’s name and date of birth but was surprised to find his brother had outstanding warrants for his arrest. The driver then provided his own information which resulted in the identification of multiple warrants. Further investigation with the three young men found them in possession of 16 grams of cocaine and over $2,000 in cash. The driver was arrested for the drug offense and driving suspension. Good job Officer Palmer and Corporal Geerdes!

Stolen Vehicles

There were no vehicles stolen this past week.

Vehicle Break-Ins

No vehicle break-ins were reported this past week.

DUI’s

There was one DUI arrests this past week within Edgewater. Arrested for DUI:

38 year old Denver resident

Shoplifting 

Edgewater Officers received seven reports of shoplifting at local stores this report period.

Traffic Issues

Edgewater Officers performed about 40 traffic stops for traffic enforcement during the past week.  Drivers were contacted for hit & run, speeding, careless driving, red light violations, turn violations, failing to signal, reckless driving, following too closely, parking violations, abandoned vehicles, weaving, expired plates, registration violations, suspensions, denials and revocations, and multiple traffic accidents.

The radar trailer was located in the 2000 block of Gray Street and the 6100 block of W. 22nd Ave during the reporting period.  The radar trailer will be moving to the 6100 block of West 22nd Avenue this week and the 5300 block of W. 20th Ave this coming week.

Calls for Service

Edgewater Officers additionally responded to calls involving fireworks, medical assists, trespassing, child abuse, runaways, alarms, civil assists, noise complaints, criminal mischief, harassment, suspicious persons, disturbances, welfare checks, animals at large, neighbor disputes, barking dogs, welfare checks, juvenile problems, thefts, and unwanted persons, intoxicated persons, found property, domestic violence, assault, criminal mischiefs, and multiple warrant arrests. Edgewater Officers self-initiated and responded to about 122 various calls this reporting period – thank you neighbors for notifying our dispatch center at 303-271-0211 for the many calls and for our Edgewater Officers for their fine work during two very busy weeks!

Thank You Notes from Neighbors – Kudo’s

Officer Kate Connelly-McVoy’s last day with the Edgewater Police Department was July 5th, as she’ll be beginning her new career with the Denver Police Department on July 11th. Officer Connelly-McVoy served our city for four strong years as a patrol officer, detective and arrest control instructor and we wish her all the best on her new career next door!

The Edgewater Police Department salutes Sheriff Shrader, Undersheriff Fleer, Division Chief Pocsik, Sgt. Teague, Sgt. Payne, and Deputies Spaw, Tillman, Jann, Saunders, Wilson and Corbin who covered Edgewater service calls during the department’s staff retreat.

Neighbor comments on the barricaded gunman situation;

Incredibly grateful for the officers handling of the barricaded gunman and there were no injuries to anyone involved. Stay safe. Thank you.

    How come no mention of police/suspect involved shooting on Jay St.?
