The Duke Street Kings 19th Annual, Blues & BBQ for Better Housing will be coming to Citizen’s Park in Edgewater on Saturday, August 13, 2016 from 11 am to 8 pm. Proceeds from the event go towards Habitat for Humanity. Here is our interview with event organizer Ranger Miller on why they chose to move the event to Edgewater this year:

What excites you most about the event this year?

We are super excited about our new location. Citizen’s Park in Edgewater features grass and shade. It will be such a nice space for our patrons to set up and get comfortable and enjoy a fun day of music for a great cause.

What is the mission of Habitat and what do proceeds from this event support?

Habitat for Humanity was established in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. The Fullers wanted to address poverty housing on a global scale through “partnership housing”. The Fullers’ concept of partnership housing centers on those in need of adequate shelter working side-by-side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses. Habitat’s no profit and no interest financing is affordable. And the “Fund for Humanity” (homeowner mortgage payments, no interest loans and fundraising dollars) provides the capital needed to build. Last year at Blues & BBQ we raised $30,000 in one day of music. Our donation fixed up a home in Globeville for a deserving family. We will do the same with this year’s proceeds.

Why did you choose Edgewater for this event?

We wanted to find a new home that had grass, trees and parking and where we wouldn’t have to shut down a street. One of the musicians who will play this year, David Cooke from the band Double Standards, told me to look into Citizen’s Park in Edgewater. We loved the location, and as I started to work with the City of Edgewater, they were amazingly supportive. We knew we had found a new home. I think Edgewater will be home to our festival for years!
