Edgewater Police Report: 7/24-7/31/2016

From Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey:

Auto Theft Arrest

On 7/29 at about 1:40 PM Edgewater Officers received a report of an auto theft at the King Soopers parking lot, 1725 Sheridan Blvd. The victim, a Denver resident had been shopping at King Soopers and found his vehicle missing when he returned to his car at about 1:20 PM. The car theft victim called a friend after he noticed his car missing and together they went looking for his stolen 1997 Honda CRV. After driving around the area they located the Honda in the 1900 block of Fenton St and found a male getting out from the driver’s seat with the owner’s red backpack. The Honda owner telephoned dispatch and Edgewater Officers contacted the owner on Fenton St. with the stolen vehicle. Edgewater Sgt. Lovato, and Officers Challis and Fulton subsequently did an area search for the suspect and located a male matching the suspect description with a red backpack. The 39 year old male Aurora resident was subsequently arrested for the auto theft and lodged in the Jefferson County Jail. Great teamwork between the Honda owner and Edgewater Officers!

National Night Out

National Night Out is Tuesday, August 2, 2016 and we always encourage residents to acknowledge the night and the original goal which was to have neighborhoods gathering one night a year to celebrate their power to control community events, and to leave their porch light on that evening.

Having been a part of the NNO program for over 30 years I have found it best to collaborate with programs within cities that are already active and sustainable, and within the City of Edgewater the program that best fits the time of year and a successful neighborhood program is our Community Picnic on Saturday August 27, from 6 – 9 PM.
On that date and time your Police Department will celebrate the goals of NNO with residents while meeting neighbors and providing information and updates on the programs that contribute to community safety.

Walk Like MADD

Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MADD are hosting a fundraising event Walk Like MADD at Sloan’s Lake on Saturday, August 6, beginning at 9 AM. This 5k event is a leisurely walk for a good cause, and not a race. The Edgewater Police Department will have a team participating in the event and encourage neighbors to join us!
