Edgewater Police Report: 7/31-8/6/2016

From Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey:

Reason for Officers Using Loudspeaker at 9:00 PM for 30 Minutes

On 8/3 at about 7:40 PM Edgewater Officers received a report of a woman that had been stabbed during a domestic dispute at 2490 Kendall St. Deputies from the Jefferson County SO and Officers from both Mountain View and Lakeside Police Departments responded to assist. As the young woman was transported to the hospital she reported that her boyfriend lived at the home with his mother and that her mother was inside the home with him. Officers made numerous and lengthy attempts to contact the mother and son via phone and loudspeaker but were unsuccessful. Edgewater Officers assisted by the Jefferson County K-9 Team eventually entered the home and found the mother safe but frightened. Officers attempted multiple and lengthy attempts at ordering the son out of the basement although he refused. A K-9 was sent into the basement and the knife wielding son was subdued and taken into custody for both an outstanding warrant and the knife assault on his girlfriend. Lodged in the Jefferson County Jail was the 26 year old male resident. Thank you to our friends with the Jefferson County SO, Lakeside and Mountain View Departments – great teamwork!

RTD Bus Totaled – Arrest

On 8/7 at about 1 AM a 2002 gray Audi was traveling southbound on Sheridan Blvd at a high rate of speed and crashed into the back end of an RTD bus which was stopped at W. 22nd Ave. Both the RTD bus and Audi were totaled in the crash.

The driver of the Audi began to run from the scene but a witness captured a photograph of the suspect before he was able to get away. Edgewater Officers arrived on scene and found a passenger on the bus injured as a result of the crash. Officers assisted the injured passenger and were contacted by the picture taking witness who pointed them in the direction the driver fled.

Edgewater Officers located the suspect driver in the area of Citizen’s Park. The witness and photograph confirmed they had the right man, and a 28 year old Lakewood man was subsequently lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on DUI and additional charges related to the Hit & Run crash.

Great team effort between the photograph taking witness and Corporal Geerdes and Officers Fulton, Palmer and Young!

Home Trespass – Arrest

On 8/3 at about 5 PM officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of Kendall St. on report of a theft from a front porch. A neighbor observed a man walking door to door and observed the man take a package from a neighbor’s front porch at which time she notified police. Sgt. Hamilton contacted the door to door man and he was identified as the thief by the neighbor. The man was found to be working as a contractor doing political canvassing for Terra Strategies. The 19 year old Denver man was issued a citation and fired by the contracting company. Great job between our alert neighbor and Sgt. Hamilton!

Neighborhood Watch

The City of Edgewater Police Department is revising our Neighborhood Watch program. There appear to be Neighborhood Watch Signs in the city that are not listed in our current records and we would like to update the list of neighbors within each Neighborhood Watch Block.

The goal is to communicate with that block captain to reinstate them and to get the block reoriented on how Neighborhood Watch will benefit both the neighbors and your police department.

Please notify Lorenzo Rendon,@ volunteers@edgewaterpd.com our volunteer coordinator with the police department and spearheading the Neighborhood Watch program in Edgewater.

Much appreciation to you and the crew(s), and gratitude to you, the citizens involved, and surrounding neighbors are, once again, kept safe without further injury. I’m also grateful for our rental unit ordinances, so the property owner has the opportunity to secure the home. Thank you all,

Very frightening neighborhood activity. Thank you for your information and for your knowledgeable handling of what could have been a much worse situation. Kudos again.

Neighbor’s notes and “Kudo’s” are placed in the lobby of the police station and placed in the respective officer’s personnel files – thanks for sharing
