Road Rage – DUI – Assault
On 8/25 at about 7:15 PM a motorist and bicyclist were traveling in the area of 20th and Pierce St. and the motorist became so enraged at the bicyclist that he drove into the rear of the bicycle. The bicyclist was able to maintain his balance and pull off to the side of the road, at which point the motorist got out of his vehicle and began punching the bicyclist.
Officers arrived on scene, broke up the fight and through witnesses and statements were able to determine that listed previously. The motorist was arrested for DUI and assault and during the course of the arrest also punched the Edgewater arresting officer. The motorist, a 43 year old male Edgewater resident from the 2000 block of Pierce St. was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on multiple charges.
Neighborhood Watch
The City of Edgewater Police Department is revising our Neighborhood Watch program. There appears to be Neighborhood Watch Signs in the city that are not listed in our current records and we would like to update the list of neighbors within each Neighborhood Watch Block.
The goal is to communicate with that block captain to reinstate them and to get the block reoriented on how Neighborhood Watch will benefit both the neighbors and your police department.

Community Picnic – August 27, 6 – 9 PM
Thanks to all that stopped by the Police Department’s table during the Community Picnic – both kids and big kids showed their skill at either throwing the baseball for speed or kicking the soccer ball for speed – always good to know we’ve got lots of talent out there!
Stolen Vehicles
On 8/22 at 7AM a resident left their Nissan Pathfinder unlocked and with the engine running in the street in front of their house in the 2800 block of Harlan Street when an unknown thief(s) stole their vehicle.
Vehicle Break-Ins
A resident in the 2000 block of Depew St. reported that he left his pick-up truck unlocked, unattended and parked in the street for a couple of days this reporting period and unknown suspect(s) entered his vehicle and stole several tools.
DUI’s
There were five DUI arrests this past week within Edgewater. Arrested for DUI:
20 year old male Edgewater resident.
24 year old female Indian Hills resident.
47 year old female Denver resident.
51 year old male Edgewater resident.
54 year old male Wheat Ridge resident.
Year to date, Edgewater Officers have arrested 131 persons for DUI.
Shoplifting
Edgewater Officers received two reports of shoplifting at local stores this report period. Arrested for shoplifting:
20 year old female Fort Polk, LA resident.
33 year old male Lakewood resident.
Traffic Issues
Edgewater Officers performed about 35 traffic stops for traffic enforcement during the past week. Drivers were contacted for hit & run, speeding, careless driving, red light violations, turn violations, failing to signal, reckless driving, following too closely, parking violations, abandoned vehicles, weaving, expired plates, registration violations, suspensions, denials and revocations, and multiple traffic accidents.
The radar trailer was located in the 5400 block of W. 24th Ave this past week and will be relocated to the 2200 block of Eaton this week.

Calls for Service
Edgewater Officers additionally responded to calls involving violation of protection orders, medical assists, trespassing, alarms, civil assists, noise complaints, criminal mischief, harassment, suspicious persons, disturbances, welfare checks, animals at large, neighbor disputes, barking dogs, welfare checks, juvenile problems, thefts, and unwanted persons, intoxicated persons, found property, domestic violence, assault, criminal mischiefs, and multiple warrant arrests. Edgewater Officers self-initiated and responded to about 202 various calls this reporting period including 6 Alarm Calls and 11 Emergency 911 Calls – thank you neighbors for notifying our dispatch center at 303-271-0211 for the many calls and for our Edgewater Officers for their fine work during two very busy weeks!

Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team
Dear Sheriff Shrader, Chiefs, Kilpatrick and Wick, and Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team,
I would like to acknowledge the assistance that Commander Mark Nazaryk and the Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team provided to the Edgewater Police Department on a particular busy day.
On June 21, 2016 at about 10 AM the Bellco Credit Union, 1931 Sheridan Blvd was robbed by threat of a bomb and the suspect was tracked to a nearby apartment complex by Edgewater Officers. Officers from multiple outside agencies responded and assisted in setting up a perimeter in search of the suspect. As the apartment complex has numerous buildings and hundreds of residents, the search area was extensive and difficult to contain. If it had not been for the assistance of the outside agency officers, the search would have proved problematic for Edgewater Officers.
The operation moved forward to a potential barricaded gunman situation, and the Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team, led by Commander Nazaryk responded at which point the outside agency officers were replaced with personnel from the Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team.
While the Edgewater Officers were assisting with the preliminary activities at the SWAT event, we overheard a large number of handgun rounds being fired just south of our location. We learned that Golden Police Detectives were involved in a felony traffic stop in which the driver was firing multiple rounds at police officers. The Golden Detectives were returning fire and were in immediate need of back up assistance.
Due to the urgency of the call I needed to redeploy two Edgewater Officers to assist their Golden counterparts fully understanding that Commander Nazaryk and his team were in control of the SWAT situation. As both scenes required command and control competency I quickly assessed both operations and learned that Commander Nazaryk had things well in control.
As the shots fired scene involved three Golden Detectives involved in the firefight, a suspect that sustained a gunshot wound, three damaged police vehicles, a damaged suspect vehicle, damaged property and over 25 rounds fired, the scene and follow-up required extensive investigation. Additionally the SWAT operation was fully engaged with a full team call out and operators moving towards a breach situation with a possible barricaded gunman. As Commander Nazaryk and his team progressed through the tactical operation with patience and professionalism, I was able to maintain
communication with both events. Although the SWAT operation did not find the suspect on the initial breach and search, the event unfolded slowly, methodically, and professionally and provided the many concerned residents the peace of mind that the suspect was no longer in their community.
As a police chief of a smaller agency, it can often be difficult to maintain a professional level of service to our community, but days like that mentioned above would be next to impossible but not for the professional assistance Commander Nazaryk and the entire Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team.
