School Traffic Safety in Edgewater

LTdj8yjyc

From Officer Ed McCallin of the Edgewater Police Department:

Neighbors,
Just a friendly reminder that school starts on Thursday, August 18th and with it some of the traffic issues in the areas around the schools. The best way to insure safety around our schools during the morning and afternoon rush is for everyone to follow both the traffic regulation and parking restrictions.

Jefferson Jr/Sr High School at 2305 Pierce St:

  • Speed on Pierce St (the speed limit on Pierce St is 25 MPH and 20 MPH when the School Zone lights are blinking).
  • Turning into and out of Jefferson’s south parking lot (the school has changed the entrance and exit from the south lot to ease traffic congestion).
  • Be aware of pedestrians in the crosswalks on Pierce St (the school is constantly reminding the students and adults to use the crosswalks).

Lumberg Elementary School at 6705 W. 22nd Ave:

  • Speed on all of the streets surrounding the school (please slow down).
  • STOP signs (come to a complete stop at all STOP signs and check for pedestrians crossing the street, 22nd & Newland, 22nd & Marshall and 24th & Marshall all see a lot of pedestrian traffic from the school).
  • Do not stop in the middle of the street on 22nd Ave to drop off and/or pick up kids and/or adults (as this backs up traffic behind the stopped car and generally irritates the drivers behind the stopped vehicle, who then tend to drive more aggressive than necessary)
  • Parking restrictions (please obey all stopping/parking restrictions around the school).
  • Do not park in such a way that you block private driveways.

Edgewater Elementary School at 5570 W. 24th Ave:

  • Speed on all of the streets surrounding the school (please slow down).
  • Do not stop in the middle of the street on Depew St or on 24th Ave to drop off and/or pick up kids and/or adults (as this backs up traffic behind the stopped car and generally irritates the drivers behind the stopped vehicle, who then tend to drive more aggressively than necessary).
  • Parking restrictions (please obey all stopping/parking restriction in particular the drop off zone on Depew St in the morning).

While this list is most certainly not all inclusive, these are some of the more frequent traffic issues that are seen
and reported around the schools. The schools have been very cooperative in educating the students and the adults who drop them off and pick them up, as to the traffic concerns.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns,
Officer Ed
