Nextdoor and Neighborhood Watch

Our Edgewater Police Department Volunteers are researching methods to increase our Neighborhood Watch participation and participation in Nextdoor Edgewater. Both of these programs allow us to communicate more efficiently with residents for civic events and crime prevention purposes. Please consider inviting your neighbors to participate in Nextdoor Edgewater and contacting our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Lorenzo – volunteers@edgewaterpd.com to get more information on making your neighborhood safer.

Stolen Vehicle – Arrests

On 9/4 at about 7:20 PM Officer Palmer was patrolling the Edgewater Marketplace parking lot clearing license plates for possible stolen vehicles. Officer Palmer located a 2012 VW Passat that was listed as an active steal out of Denver from 8/29. Officer Palmer contacted a passenger in the vehicle, a 26 year old Denver female. The female indicated that her boyfriend had borrowed the car to go to the store and that her boyfriend and another friend were in King Soopers. Edgewater Officer Robenalt arrived to assist and as officers attempted to make contact with the two males, they fled although they were subsequently taken into custody in the northeast corner of the shopping center. The boyfriend and driver, a 40 year old Denver male was found to have an extraditable warrant out of Oregon for drug offenses, and was on pretrial release for a previous Denver motor vehicle theft. The boyfriend was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail and the two passengers were released pending possible charges with investigations. Great observation by Officer Palmer, and great teamwork by Officer Palmer, Officer Robenalt and assisting Officers Green and Harris of the Mountain View Police Department and Officer Hernandez from the Lakeside Police Department.

Stolen Automobile and handgun – shots fired

On 8/31 at about 1:50 AM Edgewater Officers heard 7 gunshots coming from the area of 25th and Fenton Streets. At 1:51 AM Edgewater Officers heard a vehicle crash at 20th and Fenton Streets.Officers arrived at the crash site and found a black Ford Excursion with extensive damage in the middle of 20th and Fenton and a red Saturn that had collided with the Excursion and the house on the S/W Corner of the intersection. Three males in the Saturn reported that a B/M with a red sweat shirt and red shorts that had been driving the Ford got out and started to run. The males from the Saturn grabbed onto the Ford driver although he slipped out of his sweatshirt and began running north on Fenton Street losing a shoe along the way just prior to officers arrival.

Officers from multiple agencies began searching the area for the B/M Ford Driver.

Officers learned that the Ford Excursion was an unreported stolen vehicle out of Wheat Ridge in the area of 35th and Gray Streets. When Wheat Ridge Officers responded to 35th and Gray Streets they located the owner of the stolen vehicle. The owner indicated that he was missing his Ford Excursion and also said that his Dodge Challenger had been broken into and he was missing a handgun.

Officers located multiple shells in the area of 25h and Fenton Streets, and they located a handgun under the Ford Excursion.

Officers have identified a suspect in this case and have talked with the young man’s mother – as the primary offenses occurred in the City of Wheat Ridge, the Wheat Ridge Police Detectives will be assuming the lead in the investigation.

Neighborhood Watch

On 9/10 at 5 PM Edgewater’s Rose Acres Block Party will be held and your police department will be presenting the benefits of Neighborhood Watch. I hope to get to meet many of you from the Rose Acres neighborhood on Saturday night!

The City of Edgewater Police Department is revising our Neighborhood Watch program. There appears to be Neighborhood Watch Signs in the city that are not listed in our current records and we would like to update the list of neighbors within each Neighborhood Watch Block.

The goal is to communicate with that block captain to reinstate them and to get the block reoriented on how Neighborhood Watch will benefit both the neighbors and your police department. Please notify Lorenzo Rendon, volunteers@edgewaterpd.com our volunteer coordinator with the police department and spearheading the Neighborhood Watch program in Edgewater.

Stolen Vehicles

On 8/28 overnight a resident in the 2000 block of Eaton St. left their 2001 blue Jeep Cherokee locked and unattended when an unknown thief(s) stole their vehicle.

Vehicle Break-Ins

A resident in the 2000 block of Depew St. reported that he left his pick-up truck unlocked, unattended and parked in the street for a couple of days this reporting period and unknown suspect(s) entered his vehicle and stole several tools.

DUI’s

On 8/29 at about 1:37 AM Officer Palmer was patrolling in the 5600 block of W. 26th Ave when he observed a female chasing after a white colored sedan that was driving slowly through the apartment complex parking lot. Officer Palmer stopped the vehicle and contacted a very intoxicated male. The female indicated that she was up late watching television when she heard a loud crash outside. When she went to investigate she observed damage to the side of her vehicle and the white sedan driving away at which point she gave chase. Arrested for DUI and Hit and Run was a 48 year old Edgewater male.

There were two DUI arrests this past week within Edgewater. Arrested for DUI:

47 year old female Denver resident.
48 year old male Edgewater resident.

Year to date, Edgewater Officers have arrested about 133 persons for DUI.

Shoplifting

Edgewater Officers received one report of shoplifting at local stores this report period. Arrested for shoplifting:

25 year old male Denver resident.

Traffic Issues

On 9/1 at about 4:20 PM an 8 year old boy was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound in the 5200 block of W. 26th Ave. Witnesses indicated that the boy “darted out” into the street in between blocks and was immediately struck by an eastbound vehicle which was traveling between 20 – 25 mph. The boy indicated that he thought he saw his sister at Burger King and was running across the street to see her. The boy sustained multiple cuts and bruises but was treated by his mother rather than be transported to the hospital. No summons was issued in this case.

Edgewater Officers performed about 38 traffic stops for traffic enforcement during the past week. Drivers were contacted for hit & run, speeding, careless driving, red light violations, turn violations, failing to signal, reckless driving, following too closely, parking violations, abandoned vehicles, weaving, expired plates, registration violations, suspensions, denials and revocations, and multiple traffic accidents.

The radar trailer was located in the 2200 block of Eaton St. this past week and will be relocated to the 2400 block of Lamar St. this week.

Calls for Service

Edgewater Officers additionally responded to calls involving violation of protection orders, medical assists, trespassing, alarms, civil assists, noise complaints, criminal mischief, harassment, suspicious persons, disturbances, welfare checks, animals at large, neighbor disputes, barking dogs, welfare checks, juvenile problems, thefts, and unwanted persons, intoxicated persons, found property, domestic violence, assault, criminal mischiefs, and multiple warrant arrests. Edgewater Officers self-initiated and responded to about 205 various calls this reporting period including 3 Alarm Calls and 13 Emergency 911 Calls – thank you neighbors for notifying our dispatch center at 303-271-0211 for the many calls and for our Edgewater Officers for their fine work during two very busy weeks!

Thank You Notes from Neighbors – Kudo’s

I would like to make a suggestion to our City Council – since our alleyways are dark at night and provide a location for people to hide out of sight I would suggest that the City research more lighting in our alleyways.

I have seen more Edgewater Police Officers patrolling my street and my alley this past year than I’ve seen in the last 17 years – thank you!
