NEWS RELEASE
10/3 – 10/10/2016

Residential Burglary – A Happy Ending!

Last week I wrote;
On 9/29 Officer Challis received a report of a residential burglary in the 2400 block of Ames St. The resident indicated that on 9/28 unknown person(s) entered his unlocked garage between 7AM and 3:30 PM that date and took a golf bag and an assortment of golf clubs as well as associated sporting goods.

This week our homeowner writes;

“Thank you to Officer Challis and the EPD for tracking down my golf clubs in a matter of days and returning to me! Not only did he find my golf equipment, but he also found additional items that we did not even realize were missing when we first reported the crime. I’m new to the neighborhood and the excellent police work from the EPD turned a bad first experience into a great one! Glad to see we have such a committed group looking out for us. Thanks again!”

As Paul Harvey used to say, “Here’s, the rest of the story!”

The reason our homeowner indicated his experience turned into a great one? Our homeowner had plane tickets for this past weekend to Ohio to visit with his family and grandfather and get in a game of golf. Well, we don’t know who won that game but we do know that neighbors helping each other out and good police work by Officer Challis assisted in making that a memorable golf game!

Nextdoor and Neighborhood Watch

Our Edgewater Police Department Volunteers are researching methods to increase our Neighborhood Watch participation and participation in Nextdoor Edgewater. Both of these programs allow us to communicate more efficiently with residents for civic events and crime prevention purposes. Please consider inviting your neighbors to participate in Nextdoor Edgewater and contacting our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Lorenzo – volunteers@edgewaterpd.com to get more information on making your neighborhood safer.

Thank You Notes from Neighbors – Kudo’s

I would like to thank Corporal Geerdes and Officer Palmer for coming to our apartment last night. I called because I saw a young man hurting his small dog. Once the Police showed up he was acting like he loved that dog so much. I did see him hurting the dog. The dog was “crying” as a hurt dog would; it was not just a short yelp.

I wanted to tell you that both officers were concerned enough to make sure the dog could walk well. The officers held the dog and checked on him to see that he was ok. Thanks to Corporal Geerdes and Officer Palmer for coming to our apartments and checking on this little dog. You both have good hearts!

The competence, courage, and especially the restraint demonstrated by your officers was not just exemplary, but extraordinary beyond the pale. There were certainly moments during this horrific confrontation that at least one of your officers would have been clearly justified in using deadly force, but all remarkably exercised a most exceptional level of self-discipline and restraint. Please extend to your officers the highest compliments for their professionalism and courage!

Thank you to our outstanding police volunteers, Frank Kyper, Lorenzo Rendon and Dave Suter for the countless hours they are contributing to making our community and city a safer place to live, work and play! Chief Mackey

Neighbor’s notes and “Kudo’s” are placed in the lobby of the police station and placed in the respective officer’s personnel files – thanks for sharing!
