From Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey:

NEWS RELEASE
9/26 – 10/3/2016

Cpl. Geerdes, Sgt. Hamilton, and MVPD Officer Toth thwart robbery

Corporal Geerdes got dispatched to a handicapped parking violation in front of King Soopers at about 8:50PM last night. He contacted three persons in a pickup truck. A witness indicated that two of the persons walked into the grocery store, and then one of them walked back out to the truck just before Geerdes’ arrival.

Officers got the occupants of the vehicle out of the truck and one of them started to run, but thought better of it. Mountain View PD Officer Toth arrived on scene to assist. The truck did not belong to any of them and no one could tell us who it belonged to or why they were there. Two of the persons had no ID and were acting very nervous. There were a bunch of black latex gloves in the truck and a couple of ID’s that didn’t belong to any of them. Cpl. Geerdes saw a pistol tucked in between the driver’s seat and the center console. Geerdes told the driver that he was under arrest and started to handcuff him. The driver immediately pushed Geerdes away from him and tried to run. Geerdes tackled the driver as he fled. The backseat passenger who had no ID ran through the parking lot toward Target. Officer Toth went in foot pursuit of him. The front seat passenger put his hands up and stayed where he was. Geerdes was fighting with the driver but had him down and was on top of him. Sgt. Hamilton lost visual contact with Toth and could not raise him on the radio. It turns out Officer Toth tasered and then fought with the backseat passenger before getting him under control. When Sgt. Hamilton returned to Geerdes he was still fighting with the driver and it took them both to get him handcuffed. The third person was cooperative throughout. Officers never contacted the fourth person who had gone into the grocery store just before their arrival.

The backseat passenger that Toth tasered was complaining of all kinds of injuries, but then proceed to slip his handcuffs and crawl through the sliding partition of one of the patrol cars into the front seat. Turns out he has five felony warrants including one for Aggravated Robbery. Lakewood PD had an Attempt to Locate on the truck in connection to a series of thefts in Lakewood.

The truck was backed into a parking space directly in front of the grocery store with the engine running. Three suspects in the truck with a pistol and latex gloves. One of them wanted for Aggravated Robbery. None of them could say why they were there, who the truck belongs to or who the gun belongs to.

Thank You Notes from Neighbors – Kudo’s

I would like to thank Corporal Geerdes and Officer Palmer for coming to our apartment last night. I called because I saw a young man hurting his small dog. Once the Police showed up he was acting like he loved that dog so much. I did see him hurting the dog. The dog was “crying” as a hurt dog would; it was not just a short yelp.

I wanted to tell you that both officers were concerned enough to make sure the dog could walk well. The officers held the dog and checked on him to see that he was ok. Thanks to Corporal Geerdes and Officer Palmer for coming to our apartments and checking on this little dog. You both have good hearts!

Thank you to our outstanding police volunteers, Frank Kyper, Lorenzo Rendon and Dave Suter for the countless hours they are contributing to making our community and city a safer place to live, work and play! Chief Mackey

Neighbor’s notes and “Kudo’s” are placed in the lobby of the police station and placed in the respective officer’s personnel files – thanks for sharing!
