In light of the presidential election and growing fear among immigrants, Jefferson Junior/Senior High School Principal Michael James released a statement in support of immigrant students and their families.

Here is the content of the letter that was posted on the school website in English and Spanish:

Resolution in support of all our students at Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School

Dear Jefferson Community:

In light of recent events we wanted to again share with you our commitment to all students that walk through the doors of Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School.

Our commitment is as follows:

  • As educators we want to take this opportunity to show public support of immigrant families.
  • Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School is a school that serves numerous immigrant families. We will continue to do so.
  • Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School, its administration, teachers, counselors and staff will support all students equally, whether documented or undocumented, as required by Plyler v Doe.
  • Our mission: To ensure a quality education for all students so that they have the knowledge and 21st century skills necessary to be successful contributors in a global society.
  • Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School will help all students pursue a higher education, regardless of immigration status. Some resources can be found at https://goo.gl/Lm0c3p
  • Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School supports “National Educators’ Coming Out Day” every April 7th!

Update:

Edgewater Mayor Kristian Teegardin also released this statement, “By passing a Resolution of Inclusivity this past year, Edgewater’s City Council supports all of our community members  as well as all of our students at Jefferson Jr/Sr High School.”
