New Year’s Resolution
Mrs. Mackey and I went for a walk yesterday with a family friend, Mr. Dick Flemming who is 101 years old and walks better than most sixty year olds. We get together with Mr. Flemming a couple of times a year and always leave him with a great sense of encouragement. I say that because Mr. Flemming is one of the more positive people either of us has met in our lives and he attributes his longevity to a positive outlook on life. So, my wife and I have discussed Dick’s longevity trait and agreed that for this year our number one resolution is to have a more positive outlook for 2017.
Police Department Assessment Report – Tonight!
The January 5th City Council Meeting which begins at 7PM will include a presentation on the police department assessment completed recently by KRW Associates. The report which includes interviews with community stakeholders will provide our Mayor and City Council with twenty suggested recommendations for the improvement of our police department. The police department will begin the process of developing a strategic plan based on the twenty recommendations and with direction from the Mayor, Council, City Manager, and Police Command Staff.
Name that Beat – Final Vote!
Our Police Department is in the process of organizing a new Community Policing Program for Edgewater, and would like your assistance. We will be dividing the city into eleven separate Beats or Service Areas that will each be assigned an Edgewater Police Officer for communication purposes on Nextdoor. (We currently have Rose Acres and Lake Shore neighborhoods.)
We would like your assistance in naming the separate Beats or neighborhoods, and would like to start with polling our Nextdoor residents on an Edgewater theme. One such theme or category could be the names of trees as we’re a community with tree lines streets. The organization of Beats on an alphabetical system utilizing tree names would be A, B, C – Aspen, Burch, Cherry, etc. The poll has reached the FINAL STAGE and will be out shortly. The final poll will have the top two vote getting choices of Colorado Wildlife and Colorado Trees from which you can vote.
When the poll comes out shortly on Nextdoor, please take a minute to vote on the theme you would most like to see utilized for our neighborhoods. This is our third poll which includes the top two vote getters from previous polls. Thank you!

Nextdoor and Neighborhood Watch are Growing!
Our tremendous volunteer, Lorenzo Rendon has done an exceptional job in his first year as Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. Lorenzo has spoken to many of you and is arranging block meetings for this spring. As we begin to identify and sign our Neighborhood Watch Blocks, we will also begin the process of comparing crime statistics in Watch Blocks compared to all other blocks. The NW program has historically been extremely successful in deterring crime, and I’m certain it will do the same for Edgewater. Our Edgewater Police Department Volunteers are researching methods to increase our Neighborhood Watch participation and participation in Nextdoor Edgewater. Both of these programs allow us to communicate more efficiently with residents for civic events and crime prevention purposes. Please consider inviting your neighbors to participate in Nextdoor Edgewater and contacting our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Lorenzo – volunteers@edgewaterpd.com to get more information on making your neighborhood safer.
Stolen Vehicles
There were no reported stolen vehicles during this reporting period or in all of December. There were a total of 44 vehicles stolen in Edgewater during 2016 as compared to 55 stolen in 2015.
There was a total of 44 cars stolen in Edgewater in 2016; which his down 11 from last year. Honda vehicle thefts again led the way for the vehicle of choice for auto thieves.
There was a total of 29 unrelated recovered stolen vehicles in Edgewater in 2016; which is up from 17 last year.
Corporal Geerdes is the Edgewater Police Department’s new coordinator for the state wide task force on auto thefts. Corporal Geerdes has teamed with the task force for several auto theft stings this past year within Edgewater. He will be increasing the involvement of this multi-agency unit within our city this coming year which should lead to a continued decrease in this crime. More to follow.

Traffic Issues
Edgewater Officers performed about 133 traffic stops for traffic enforcement during this reporting period. Drivers were contacted for hit & run, speeding, careless driving, red light violations, turn violations, failing to signal, reckless driving, following too closely, parking violations, abandoned vehicles, weaving, expired plates, registration violations, suspensions, denials and revocations, and multiple traffic accidents and cited two persons for parking violations.
The radar trailer was in the shop this week due to snow and maintenance. The trailer will be moving to 24th and Otis Street when the streets clear of snow.

Calls for Service
Edgewater Officers additionally responded to calls involving violation of protection orders, medical assists, trespassing, alarms, civil assists, noise complaints, criminal mischief, harassment, suspicious persons, disturbances, welfare checks, animals at large, neighbor disputes, barking dogs, welfare checks, juvenile problems, thefts, and unwanted persons, intoxicated persons, found property, domestic violence, assault, criminal mischiefs, and multiple warrant arrests. Edgewater Officers self-initiated and responded to about 344 various calls this reporting period including 8 Alarm Calls, 3 Welfare Checks and 21 Emergency 911 Calls – thank you neighbors for notifying our dispatch center at 303-271-0211 for the many calls and for our Edgewater Officers for their fine work during two very busy weeks!
Volunteer Driver Needed – POSITION FILLED!
The Police Department is looking for a volunteer person to shuttle vehicles between the department and the Jefferson County Maintenance Shop, for routine maintenance issues about one day per month. Volunteers must have clear records and a good driving history. If interested please contact Chief Mackey by Nextdoor email or at 720-763-3000.
