Jefferson County School Board Candidate Forum for Diverse Learners Set for Oct. 25

A free community forum for Jefferson County school board candidates will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Jefferson Junior/Senior High School, 2305 Pierce St., Edgewater, CO 80214. The community is invited to attend and participate.

“An Evening Discussion on Diverse Learners in Jefferson County” is sponsored by Edgewater Collective and Jefferson County Association for Gifted Children (JAGC), two Jefferson County advocacy organizations. The event is focused on diverse learners, who account for over 50 percent of the Jeffco school district student population.

Community members are encouraged to email questions for the candidates in advance to Joel Newton at joel@edgewatercollective.org or Susan Miller at info@jeffcogifted.org.

“This forum is an opportunity to raise the voices of parents and students that can be underserved,” said Joel Newton, Edgewater Collective Executive Director.  “Our hope is to hear how candidates will make sure that our educational system is preparing all students for college and career, including gifted students and those from Spanish-speaking homes.”

Edgewater Collective is focused on cultivating partnerships for thriving Edgewater area schools. Their current project is the Jefferson Success Pathway, which hopes to see all students in the 80214 area succeed from cradle to career. Edgewater Collective also works with partners to connect families with resources at the Jefferson Community Center inside Jefferson Junior/Senior High School.

“We are excited to be joining efforts with Edgewater Collective in this candidate forum about diverse learners.  We’re anticipating a lively discussion, focused on those students who fall outside the normal school experience, many of our most vulnerable students. They include special needs, at-risk students in poverty, English as a second language and advanced learners,” said Susan Miller, JAGC board president. “These students represent more than half of the school district population and their needs are critical and important for candidates to address at our forum.”

JAGC is a nonprofit group providing leadership and support to families and educators of advanced learners in Jefferson County. JAGC sponsors community programs and hosts Ambassadors who work in partnership with the Jefferson County School District’s Gifted & Talented (GT) Department.
