From Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey:
On the evening of April 5th, 2018 I was sitting in our Edgewater City Council Session when advised of a shooting of a young man by the name of Andrew Jenicek at 20th and Sheridan Blvd.
I arrived to find that two young heroic girls had just been relieved of performing CPR on Andrew and our entire staff of officers was on scene or en route to the location. The shooting of Andrew Jenicek on that date was followed by the arrests of the suspects and lengthy investigation and two separate trials which ended yesterday after 506 days with the sentencing of the third and final suspect in the case (see story here).
We have the utmost respect for the Jenicek family and pray for their continued healing over the senseless death of Andrew. As with all tragedies, the goal is to move forward for the better. This terrible event spurred one of those fine young ladies who provided comfort to a dying man during his final moments to move onto nursing school this year and to be supported by the Jenicek family and our department. Our group of young officers have never let a week go by without talking or visiting with the Jenicek family in these past 506 days and will be playing in the golf tournament for the 2nd year that they helped develop in Andrew’s name.
In the midst of this tragic event our community has grown stronger and our hearts will always be with the Jenicek family.
