From Micha Rosenoer:
Dear Neighbors,
I am honored to announce that I will be on the ballot as a candidate for Edgewater City Council this November 2019. As the daughter of a military veteran and an immigrant, I know the meaning of hard work. I will use that determination — as well as my experience as a nonprofit leader, policy advocate, and community organizer — to represent our community values on city council.
Edgewater is a fantastic town where we get the best of small-town life along with the benefits of living near the big city. As I’ve been talking to voters about why they love Edgewater, most people say the same thing – our community has a unique character and sense of community, and that’s worth protecting.
To do that, we need strong leaders on city council with a forward-thinking vision for our town. With my background in policy, community outreach, and local governance, I am the right fit for the job. After graduating from UC Berkeley, I moved to Washington D.C. to work on environmental policy before moving to Maine and North Carolina where I taught high school. A few years later I moved to Durango where I worked with local businesses to protect Colorado’s public lands and support economic revitalization in rural towns. But my soon-to-be husband, Patrick, has lived in Denver his whole life – his great grandfather actually ran a butcher shop in Wheat Ridge in the early 1900s – so I moved here to build a life with him in 2017. That is when I became the Director of a nonprofit that recruits and trains women to run for office across the state.
Now I am running for city council because Edgewater needs leaders to protect our way of life as Colorado continues to grow and change. Below are some of the issues I would prioritize as a city councilor:
- Ensuring Edgewater is a leader on clean air and sustainability. As Colorado continues to grow, so does the pressure on our environment. In fact, we live just a few miles from some of the worst air pollution in the country. We should be a leader on issues like clean energy, composting and recycling, and public transportation to ensure our kids and elderly have clean air and water for generations to come.
- Preparing for growth with a focus on supporting working families. Working families are being forced out of their neighborhoods across the Denver metro area because of rising housing prices. While the cost of living is going up, our funding for local schools, infrastructure, transportation, and wages are stagnating. Edgewater should work with surrounding cities and the state to prepare for growth and ensure our economy works for all.
- Supporting small businesses. Local businesses help create Edgewater’s sense of livability and walkability. The city should continue supporting small businesses and ensure our zoning policies attract businesses that reflect our values and support a sense of community.
- Enhancing community and civic engagement. Edgewater is diverse racially and ethnically, with over 40% Latinx community members. The city council can do more to ensure all Edgewater residents can engage in public processes. That means more outreach, and services like Spanish translation of city documents, and potentially childcare at city meetings so that all residents have the opportunity to have their voices heard.
In the end, though, being a city councilor isn’t about me — it’s about representing all of Edgewater and our shared values. I want to hear from you and learn more about why you love Edgewater, what you’d like to protect, and what you want to see from your city council.
