Edgewater Business Association Supports Edgewater Ballot Question 2D

The Edgewater Business Association is in support of Edgewater’s Ballot Question 2D and its authorization of the City to provide telecommunications services if it deems it necessary. Fast and reliable internet and data services are essential for business owners and employees who work in Edgewater.

Edgewater Councilmember Caleb Rountree expressed his appreciation for the EBA’s support of 2D, “I’m thrilled to have the EBA’s support for 2D. Nearly every business in Edgewater relies on internet access to accept payment, communicate with patrons, and grow their business. 2D shows our business community that we’re serious about making sure Edgewater businesses are never at a competitive disadvantage.”

Here’s a description of Ballot Question 2D from City Councilmember John Beltrone:

If approved, the City would be authorized but not obligated to provide high-speed internet, telecommunications services, and/or cable television services.

Background: Colorado Senate Bill 152 became law in 2005 and prohibits municipalities from providing telecommunications services. Since its passage, many Colorado cities and towns have voted to exempt themselves from the law’s provisions. On September 3, City Council unanimously passed an ordinance brought by Councilmember Caleb Rountree setting this ballot question, which would reassert local authority on the matter. Although the City does not have any current plans to provide telecommunications services, passage would give the City the option to compete with telecommunications providers in the future.
