Two businesses at Edgewater Public Market have teamed up to host a used bicycle drive and celebration on Saturday, September 28, in support of Bicycles 4 Humanity, a grassroots nonprofit that collects bikes from across Colorado and ships them to community-based organizations in southern Africa.

Beer, Bikes & Bands
Edgewater Public Market (5505 W. 20th Ave., Edgewater, CO)
Saturday, September 28, 12 to 5 p.m.

Beer, Bikes & Bands will include a bicycle drive; free bike tune-ups from Wheat Ridge Cyclery and RiNo Velo; a free Strider bike race for kids ages 2 to 6, with prizes; free music from DJ TP and Caleb & Zoe; free outdoor axe throwing from American Axes; and more. Further details are here.

Event organizers Happy Cones and Barquentine Brewing Co., both located at Edgewater Public Market, will give a free ice cream cone and a free pint of craft beer to those who donate a bike.

All donated bikes will be shipped by Bicycles 4 Humanity to Namibia and Zambia, where they work with local community organizations to help supply and run bike shops in mostly rural areas. The bike shops create a sustainable business ecosystem and provide healthcare workers, teachers, farmers, and students with access to reliable transportation. Founded in 2007, Bicycles 4 Humanity’s Colorado chapter has shipped 20,000 bikes to southern Africa since then.

Hap Cameron, owner of Happy Cones, hosted a similar event in Australia in 2011. “Our event was a huge success in Melbourne, and helped Bicycles 4 Humanity send hundreds of bikes to Namibia,” Cameron said. “I’ve always thought our Colorado community would be just as enthusiastic about this organization and their mission.”

All donated bicycles must be in usable condition. “A good way to know whether we can use your bike is to ask yourself two questions,” said Josh Pace, director of Bicycles 4 Humanity Colorado. “Can you ride it? And can you stop it? If the answer to both is yes, we can use your bike.”
