As I wrote in December, I have been on the lookout for a new publisher for the Echo. I’ve enjoyed serving Edgewater on City Council and am running for a full four year term, but this means that I am no longer the best person to run our small, but mighty source of local news. The Echo has long been a project of the nonprofit Edgewater Collective that I run, but our new strategic focus on working with Latino communities across Jefferson County does not include the Echo.
Several people have expressed interest in contributing to the Echo’s future. Local journalism is more important than ever, and the Echo is no exception. The outlet’s name comes from a print newspaper from the 1920s (read more about our history). While print distribution is unlikely to be in our near-term future, there are plenty of fresh ideas for how the Echo could continue to evolve.
Edgewater resident Tyler Fisher has expressed interest in leading this new initiative to expand the Edgewater Echo. I’m excited for the vision Tyler has for what the Echo can become.
We are inviting anyone interested in shaping the future of the Echo and/or writing for it on a volunteer basis to join us for a planning and transition meeting on September 9th at 4 pm. We will meet at Barquentine Brewing in the Edgewater Public Market at 5505 W. 20th Ave.
In particular, the Edgewater Echo is looking for:
-
Contributors from the community who are willing to write for the Echo
-
Nonprofit board members who can help incorporate the Echo and guide the direction
-
Digital experts are interested in running our website and social media channels
-
Students interested in writing for the Echo and shaping our future
-
Advisors with experience in the journalism industry
In the meantime, you can reach Tyler at hello@edgewaterecho.com.
