Edgewater Police Respond to School Threat

Edgewater Police officers made their presence known at Jefferson Junior/Senior High School this morning in response to a threat made to the school. Parents received the following message from Michael James,  principal at Jefferson Jr/Sr High School.

Dear Jefferson Jr/Sr High Families,

Last night we received a report of a threat of violence towards our school via social media. Law enforcement is investigating with the support of Jeffco Public Schools security staff. We do not believe this is a credible threat, however we take all threats seriously and investigate. School will proceed as usual, and we will have additional security on site and follow district and law enforcement security protocols. We realize the recent tragedy in Florida makes this type of situation especially alarming, but this is why we have safety and security protocols in place.

Thank you to the person who reported the threat. Please take some time to talk with your student about this situation and remind your student that any potential safety concerns should be reported to the school, law enforcement, or Safe2Tell no matter how insignificant they believe it might be. Students may call the Safe2Tell program to report safety concerns anonymously at 877-542-7233, or report online at https://safe2tell.org/. Please also inform your student we have safety protocols at school and that measures are in place to keep them safe at school.

If you have any questions, call the school office. We will keep you informed if we learn anything new.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Michael James
Principal

End of School Day Update from Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey:

The school day has now ended and although the posted threat was a source of stress for our students and faculty, the school community expressed support for the extra police patrols throughout the school during the day. We hope our students and staff all have a relaxing weekend and come back to school on Monday refreshed and ready to study!
