Spring Break Idea: Start a Victory Garden

Today’s Spring Break idea involves a little history, a little dirt and some science. Now is the perfect time to start growing a “victory garden” to provide produce for your home and your neighbors through the COVID-19 pandemic. Victory gardens go back to the world wars of the 20th century when the United States government encouraged individuals and communities to grow food to support the war effort.

You can read more about the history of victory gardens here.

Here in Edgewater we have numerous community members that are knowledgable about gardening and how to grow produce in Colorado. Xerxes and Lilly Steirer have started a podcast called “Sustainable Colorado” and their most recent episode is on victory gardens.

You can listen to the Sustainable Colorado podcast here.

Another great source of information on gardening in Colorado is CSU Extension. Click here for an article about how to involve your kids in gardening.

If you don’t have space in your yard to start a garden, or you live in an apartment complex, reach out to a local community garden like the Jefferson Community Garden or the Orum House Community Garden to see if they have open plots.

Stay tuned for ways to share your produce with neighbors and those in need through the Mutual Meals project and other ideas that will pop up in the community.
