From Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey:
EPD, like most police agencies these days is working 12 hours shifts and short handed on staff. Despite that, our EPD Officers have had a flurry of great work and assistance from others that I’ll try and summarize. Chief Mackey
On 8/31 EPD Officers responded to a 911 Call of a despondent male who had hung himself from a tree in the front yard. Sgt. Challis and Officer Perez quickly cut the male down from the tree, administered CPR and as of this report his prognosis looks promising.
EPD received this nice note from District One Commander today:
Chief Mackey,
I wanted to pass along my gratitude for the assistance of your officers on the night of Tuesday, August 17th. That evening, there was a crew of very bad actors who went on a crime spree that included the senseless homicide of a young man who was in boarding school at Yeshiva Torah Chaim, the Orthodox Jewish boys school in Denver located at 1555 Stuart St. This was a very complex and relatively large scene that required a lot of resources. The spree affected several areas throughout Denver and we didn’t have enough DPD officers to secure the perimeter as well as attend to the community members who came to the scene. Edgewater Police Officers Jeffrey Carrasco, Paul Perez, and McKinzie Rees assisted us for an extended period of time that evening. They all had great attitudes; were easy to work with; and helped us out tremendously! I greatly appreciate the collaboration we have with the Edgewater Police Department and am especially grateful for the support we received that evening. Please let me know if you need anything in the future.
Respectfully,
Layla

Other Lifesaving Efforts:
Corporal Young, Officer Carrasco and Perez responded to a 911 hang-up call this past week and found a young woman unconscious with her arms slashed multiple times and bleeding profusely. Officer Perez applied a tourniquet to the woman’s arm which saved her life according to Doctors and paramedics – nice job EPD!
EPD Officers responded to a head-on crash involving a neighbor who is a West Metro Firefighter and former EFD Firefighter at 24th and Sheridan. The at fault vehicle driver crossed over the Sheridan centerline and hit head-on into the off-duty firefighter and then ran from the scene. A neighbor ran after the driver and pointed officers to the suspect who was hiding in the bed of a pick-up nearby.
The suspect turned out to be driving a stolen vehicle and was wanted for homicide(s) out of Denver and Adams County and had serious internal injuries. The man was placed into custody and found to be in need of emergency surgery due to injuries from the crash. The suspect survived, and is recovering.
Please pray for our local firefighter who had severe multiple lower body fractures and is in hospital care. EPD thanks our neighbor, outside agency officers and Colorado State Patrol for their accident investigation team.
In spite of these crazy times, we all have so much to be grateful for!
Enjoy a Peaceful Day!

Sharing is the word. We thank all our officers for taking care of us day and night.
The awesome actions of the EPD and the names of the individual officers deserve to be more widely known. I hope the Gazette is on this stuff.
Officer Paul Perez may not be as nice as he’s been painted in this article: https://youtu.be/PyAgC9iUrdA?si=WFlGinPSKARwJ_Qi
