Jefferson Junior/Senior High School’s Mia Carrillo-Caldera won the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) Kathy and Manuel Escamilla Orgulloso(a) de ser bilingüe/Proud to Be Bilingual essay contest for high school students. The essay contest encouraged students enrolled in bilingual or dual language programs to write about their personal experiences learning two languages and their pride in being bilingual.

Orgulloso/a de ser Bilingüe
Yo soy una mujer poderosa y eso es gracias a ser bilingüe. Google define la palabra bilingüe como, “que habla o emplea dos lenguas con igual perfección” pero para mi ser bilingüe es algo más que una definición, ser bilingüe es una bendición, una oportunidad, y además es algo que me conecta a mis raíces. Ser bilingüe es algo que muchos incluyéndome a mí damos por sentado. Yo por suerte crecí donde obtuve el privilegio de poder hablar y aprender inglés y español, todo eso es gracias a mis padres que se mudaron a los Estados Unidos hace 20 años para darle a mis hermanos y a mi una mejor vida.
Mis padres son verdaderamente las personas más importantes en mi vida. Ellos me criaron como si fuera su propia hija y me enseñaron cómo hablar español e inglés porque sabían que me ayudaría en el futuro. Mis padres se esforzaron para aprender inglés y nunca se han avergonzado de su acento Mexicano. Esto me inspira y me da motivación para hablar español en público sin estar avergonzada. No mentiré, solía avergonzarme de estar al lado de mi madre cuando hablaba inglés debido a su fuerte acento, pero con el paso del tiempo me di cuenta que yo era tan ignorante como las personas que solamente hablaban inglés y se burlaban de las personas que hacían un esfuerzo y que estaban aprendiendo un nuevo idioma. Cuando me di cuenta de lo que había estado haciendo por tantos años me sentí horrible y desde esa vez me he sentido orgullosa de estar al lado de mis padres cuando hablan inglés porque se que les costó gran trabajo.
I was born January 6, 2006 in Mexico and I’m not ashamed of that. I now live in Colorado and I have six siblings who are all bilingual. I attend a bilingual school that offers many great programs for people learning Spanish, learning English or for people who know how to speak both fluently. I have always connected with my Spanish teachers because there is something so caring about them. I am not sure if it is because I feel like we share more experiences in common or if they remind me of my family but I believe they are a big part of me being proud to be bilingual. One teacher in particular helped me connect with my roots. Her name is Mrs. Rodriguez; she was my teacher in 7th and 8th grade. Mrs. Rodriguez was always pushing us to accomplish great things and even to this day when I no longer have her class she checks up on me in the hallways or whenever she sees me. When you speak two languages it is so much easier to connect with people.
It has always been easy for me to make friends and this is hugely due to my ability to speak English and Spanish. For example, I have many friends that only speak Spanish because they have recently moved to this country. It is so nice to be able to be a friend to someone who might need a little extra help or guidance in a place they are new to. I also have many friends who only speak English and I love sharing my cultures and traditions with them. While I share my culture with them, I believe it helps them build respect towards other cultures and how or why they do things.
These two languages that I am so proud to speak have not only helped me in inexplicable ways but they have become part of who I am. Estos dos idiomas que estoy tan orgullosa de hablar no solamente me han ayudado en maneras inexplicables sino también se han hecho parte de la persona que soy hoy.
