This summer, he decided to take control of and learn about the energy losses in his 1956 one story home. He signed up for a City subsidized visit from the Home Energy Squad®. The popular program from Xcel Energy provided a two-hours worth of measurements, analysis and minor installs from a Home Energy Squad expert. They were able to:
- Install energy saving materials including LED lightbulbs and a front door sealing kit.
- Complete an insulation inspection of the attic and walls.
- Performed a blower door test to measure air leaks.
- Checked the safety of the furnace and water heater.

At the end of the visit, Xerxes received a comprehensive energy report with recommendations to improve the efficiency of his home. “From this report we now have an actionable list of upgrades which should save us about 25% on our energy bill when done. What surprised me was that we had really leaky ductwork, and that explained why our heat pump wasn’t keeping up. That will be a game changer for us this winter.”
