Edgewater City Council Recap: March 21, 2023

The Edgewater City Council met Tuesday, March 21, 2023 for their bi-weekly business meeting. A quorum was present, with Councilperson Donovan joining virtually and Councilperson Earp absent.

As always the meeting was called to order, roll call was taken, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Also, as always, the consent agenda was put to a vote. This week’s consent agenda included a second reading of the ordinance approving Edgewater Inn’s site development plan. It also included a second reading of Edgewater’s new sidewalk ordinance which sets standard sidewalk width at 4 feet, with new builds requiring 5 feet, and 6 feet for Harlan, Pierce and the numbered Avenues. The consent agenda passed unanimously.

Up next were short updates from the city staff. Planning Manager Mills gave a short update on the new Comprehensive Plan, saying the city will be organizing a stakeholder working group. Then Police Chief Sonstegard read council a recent commendation given to Edgewater Police Officers Forsythe and McNamee. The officers received their commendation for reacting with compassion and empathy to deescalate a situation at the Target that involved a young boy harboring resentment towards the police after the arrest of his older brother.

The meeting was then opened to public comment, there were none, so moved on to the next item, a resolution to hire an appraiser. The City wants to hire an appraiser, at a cost of approximately $4,000, to determine the value of the property at 5440 W. 25th Avenue. The city is only exploring the cost, and has no concrete plans for developing the property, or even buying it. The resolution passed unanimously.

Up next was a resolution concerning opioids. Several companies have recently settled with the State of Colorado regarding the sale of opioids. In order for the City of Edgewater to access funds from these settlements, council must first pass this resolution. It passed unanimously. The final resolution of the night addressed rental properties posting signs and disclosures concerning tenants rights. After a brief back and forth, it too passed unanimously.

The Council and Mayor gave their usual end of meeting comments, with all taking time to thank and congratulate Officers Forsythe and McNamee on their commendation and the meeting was adjourned. The Edgewater City Council meets at 6:30 PM every other Tuesday at the Edgewater Civic Center. The next meeting is scheduled for April 4th.
