This past Saturday Jefferson Junior/Senior High School wrestling coaches Oscar Fonseca and James Vogel reached a monumental achievement with their 200th dual team win under their leadership. The Jefferson girls wrestling team is ranked 7th in the state and the boys wrestling team is currently ranked 3rd in the state for 3A. With this historic win, we asked Coach Fonseca about his experiences leading the Saints.
What was the Jefferson wrestling program like when you started as a coach? What year was that?
Jefferson wrestling was going through a bit of a transition. I believe I was the 5th coach in 6 years. One year they dropped the program due to not having enough numbers. Our coaching staff took over in 2006.
Which dual was your 200th win?
It was against Englewood, which was pretty cool since one of our former wrestlers, Jesse Lucero, is coaching over there. You can tell that he is doing a great job as their wrestlers competed really well against us.
What are your hopes for this upcoming state tournament?
The goal is to get our kids to compete to their fullest capabilities and the rest will take care of itself. Would love to bring hardware home along with adding more names to the championship wall.
What do you love about coaching at Jefferson?
I love the community support and work ethic of our kids. Our teachers go above and beyond to help our kids. Our families are very much involved and are there for our wrestling program and school. Our youth program does a great job in giving opportunities to our wrestlers and are an extension of our high school family. Most of all, I’m a product of Jefferson and our coaches and families have bought into making Jefferson the best place to be. It brings me a lot of happiness seeing our former wrestlers giving back to not just our community, but any community that they get involved in.
Congratulations on your 200th win, Coach Fonseca and Coach Vogel! We’ll be rooting on the Saints wrestlers as they advance to the State Tournament!
