Letter to the Editor: Jeffco Athletic Programs

To whom it may concern:

I am writing this to put light on a situation that is about to happen in Jefferson County Schools. Next school year 2026-27 no athletic programs will be funded by Jeffco Schools. Not one penny will go to high school athletic in Jefferson County.

This will be the end of many athletic programs in Jeffco. Soon programs will begin to fall by the wayside due to lack of funding. For years athletics was never fully funded, so programs had to supplement their programs by funs raising. But now Jeffco athletic will be 100% self-funded. Programs will eventually fall by the way side due to the lack of funding.

Many schools will not feel this right away but schools like Alameda, Arvada and Jefferson will be greatly affected. In many schools the coaches tell parents their son or daughter must raise $500.00 to be a part of the team. So instead of having their child raise that amount. They will simply write a check for the $500.00. But in the lower social economic schools that just ain’t going to happen.

There are rumors out there that many sports in Jeffco will be cut for next year.

Nobody knows for sure, but usually rumors turn into fact.

The district will continue to charge the participation fee of $185.00, while not funding any athletic programs.

When we talk about athletic programs not being funded we are talking the whole athletic program. No money for athletic awards, or any recognition of athletes in the schools programs.

I am sure very few of the people in Jefferson County do not have any idea that this is going on. The press and news affiliations need to look into this and let the people know what is going on with athletics. Many young people survive in school because of the athletic programs and soon those programs may be going away.

I do truly hope that you look into this and do your best to get this changed. You need to contact Athletic Directors in Jefferson County

I am a genuinely concerned athletic supporter in Jefferson County.
